Fast becoming one of New Zealand's most popular mountain biking tracks. The Old Ghost Road is everything you could want in a Mountain Bike Adventure. Stunning Scenery, Great riding, great facilities and a real sense of being "out there" in the NZ Wilderness.

Helibike Nelson as an official partner to the trail have a number of offering to allow you to discover this track either as day trips, multi-day trips or never to be forgotten Helibike trips, and as always, we can custom make a trip that suits your needs. All of our trips can be extended and changed to suite your needs. add a return helicopter flight, A night on the west coast, a river rafting experience, or even another track - just ask!   

The Old Ghost Road - Big Day Out             $395pp minimum two persons (Big discounts for groups)

 Easy / Intermediate  - a reasonable level of fitness and skill required

Departing Nelson as the sun rises, we make the journey south down the scenic Buller Gorge to historic Lyell, scene of a large gold rush and filled with mining history. From here we unload the bikes and start our gentle climb 18km up an old dray trail through some pristine native forest to the Lyell Saddle, visiting and viewing a number of historic sites along the way. Once at the Lyell Saddle, we stop for a break and some lunch (provided) at the Lyell Saddle Hut.

For some this may be enough, but if you have it in you for a bit more climbing, then another 8km up the track you top out onto the ridge line with some never forgotten views out over the west coast and high into the alpine environment. for the fit and determined it's possible to ride the final 6km to the Ghost Lake Hut before turning around and then enjoying an incredible 30km of fantastic single-track back to the bottom.

Our return journey to Nelson includes a stop at one of Murchison's great Cafe / bars for a "Debrief"  and chance to let it all sink in.

Departing Nelson we head south thought the vineyards on a short trip to Wakefield to join our helicopter and pilot. We then depart on a 30 minute scenic flight across the Kahurangi National Park toward our destination at Ghost Lake the high point on the Old Ghost Road. Along the way we pass over Mount Owen where some of the Lord of The Rings was filmed, and some amazing earthquake formed back country, the flight alone makes this trip one not to be missed.

Once at Ghost Lake Hut, we take some time to let where we are soak in, it's incredible to realize just where you are, and how remote you are from civilization! the views up here are epic, and make sure you have a big memory card n your camera as I am sure you will need it!

From Ghost Lake Hut, we are on the bikes and warm up with a short climb to the highest point overlooking the west coast . Up here there is just so much to see, you even get the chance to knock on heaven's door!

After enjoying the heights we ride along the ridge for a while before descending into the Native bush for a fun and slightly challenging ride down through the moss covered trees to Lyell Saddle hut where we stop for lunch (Provided). It's not hard to imagine the old ghosts peeking out at you along the way!

After lunch we have an easier and more leisurely ride down the old Dray Trail, past historical mining artefacts and sites to historical Lyell, site of an old gold rush town.  There is plenty of opportunity to stop and take it all in along the way.

Once at Lyell we join our transport for a drive up the beautiful Buller Gorge to Murchison where we stop at one of the local Cafe / Bars for a "Debrief" before making our final leg back to Nelson.

The Old Ghost Road- Multi-day Epic          $ P.O.A as there are too many options to list!

Intermediate / advanced  - a good level of fitness  and moderate level of skill required

This is the trip for those that want to see the Old Ghost Road in its entirety, and want to experience back country riding and accommodation at its best. We can customize this trip to include extra nights on the track for those that want to take their time, Add in a night or two on the west coast to explore its beauty, even add in an extra track or two, choice is yours just ask.

Our trip starts with an early morning departure from Nelson and a scenic drive down the Buller gorge to Lyell where we start our 18km climb up to Lyell Saddle hut. We stop here for lunch before a further 8km of climbing gets us up to the tops and the scenic views out over the west coast, and through "Heaven's Door" out to the east. Once we have spent time soaking this all in we then descend down to Ghost Lake Hut where we stop for the night.

The Second day starts with a fun descent down numerous switchbacks and then on through some epic back country down into the river valleys below. We stop at numerous breathtaking  places along the way for rests and lunch before finally riding down through the scenic gorge and out to Seddonville. Depending on options we either stay the night here and then travel back to Nelson the next day by road, or take a spectacular 30 minute scenic helicopter flight back over the Kahurangi National Park to Nelson.
